VELO MONDIAL 2006 CONFERENCE THEME
‘Towards Prosperity’ is where the bicycle can
take us all. Exploring the ways in which the bicycle can build
the capacity of individuals and communities around the world,
the conference will highlight the benefits of the bicycle
such as cleaner air, healthier lifestyles, recreational choices,
affordable mobility, poverty alleviation, planned cities,
and more.
The bicycle, as a key link in the sustainable transport chain,
has an especially important role to play in the developing
world where its impact on livelihood is the greatest. But
the developed world also has much to learn from the developing
world, and the conference will highlight successful examples
of North-South co-operation, pointing to areas where challenges
remain. This co-operation and the cross-pollination of ideas
will lead to stronger strategy and more efficient implementation
of sustainable transport plans.
From bicycle distribution to community upliftment through
education and training in bicycle repair; from the implementation
of sustainable and equitable transport policy to the realisation
of environmentally sound transport planning; from individual
impact to community participation and projects worldwide –
Velo Mondial 2006 will look at the myriad ways in which the
bicycle can move us all ‘Towards Prosperity’.

THE MARKETPLACE SESSIONS
The Marketplace Sessions are a new and exciting format promising
a vibrant and interactive alternative to traditional conference
workshops and poster presentations.
Each 90 minute Marketplace
Session is an opportunity for delegates to choose from many
simultaneous presentations. This democratic space for ideas
offers an exceptional opportunity for broad participation,
and delegates will be able to move freely between Marketplace
Stalls, picking up on topics that are of interest to them.
The intimate space means presenters and the audience are on
the same level, promoting communication and a more effective
sharing of information. In this more informal environment,
presenters and delegates will have more opportunities to interact
with each other, a wider range of topics can be included for
discussion, and more presenters can be accommodated.
