Poverty
alleviation through affordable mobility - BEN
Cape Town's Bicycling
Empowerment Network was launched in Cape Town in February
2002 to promote the use of the bicycle to address low-cost
mobility, health and access to opportunity, employment, skills
and education. In collaboration with national and international
development and donor agencies, the project facilitates the
transferral of bicycles from Europe, the UK and the US to
South Africa; the establishment of bicycle workshop projects
in disadvantaged communities; and the introduction of bicycle
user paths and networks.
The integration of cycling in developing
countries
Locomotives is the Low Cost Mobility
Initiative Support Programme, initiated and co-ordinated
by I-ce (Interface for Cycling Expertise) in the Netherlands.
The programme partners with 11 civil society organisations
in 9 developing countries to forward the integration of cycling
in urban policies. The programme empowers the civil society
organisations who involve governments and local experts in
capacity building.
Promoting
sustainable mobility – PIARC
The World Road Association (PIARC), which is active in
130 countries, encourages the development of transport policies
and programmes that result in safe and sustainable mobility
for communities. Velo Mondial has been invited to provide
input on the economic, environmental and social benefits
of cycling as part of PIARC's 'Integrated Urban Transport'
plan.
