The Cape Argus
Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour, the largest timed cycle race in
the world, is Cape Town’s biggest annual sporting event.
This gathering of cyclists from all around the world has an
enormous economic benefit on the City, generating over ZAR 300
million in revenue. Over half of the participants are visitors
to Cape Town and many ride the tour year after year.
The Velo Mondial 2006 conference
dates were chosen deliberately to coincide with the Cape Argus
Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour so that delegates could experience
the excitement surrounding the Tour. It is hoped that many
Velo Mondial 2006 delegates will also ride in the Cycle Tour,
for the full Cape Town cycling experience.
The first Cycle Tour was held in 1978, with 525 riders. Twenty-six
years later in 2004, the Cycle Tour organisers had to limit
participation to 36,000 cyclists! This event is also very
popular with international cyclists – in 2005, 60 different
countries were represented.
The scenic magnificence and the electric atmosphere
make the tour popular with both social riders and serious
competitors. Winners complete the 110 kilometre course in
around two and a half hours, while recreational riders have
a generous allowance of seven hours to complete the Tour.
Full delegates to the Velo Mondial 2006 conference who would
like to ride in the Cycle Tour are guaranteed a hard-to-come-by
entry into the Tour. We encourage all delegates to take advantage
of this offer and ride in the world-famous Cape Argus Pick 'n
Pay Cycle Tour.
Delegates can register for the Cycle Tour on their delegate
registration form. Please see the Information
& Registration page. For more information on the Cycle
Tour, please visit the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle
Tour website.
